On 25 January 2022, Japanese shipping company MOL announced that it had completed the world's first autonomous sailing test of an unmanned container ship. This is not only the world's first autonomous navigation test using an actual operating container ship, but also the first time a drone has been used to assist in mooring a ship. The test took place between 24 and 25 January on board the Mikage, a 2015-built feeder container ship operated by Imoto Lines. The vessel followed a scheduled route from the Tsuruga port in Fukui to the Sakai port in Tottori, a journey of several hundred miles. (source: xindemarinenews.com)
