Merger of the ports of Antwerp and Zeebruge creates Europe’s largest export port

The Belgian ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge have officially completed their merger and from 28 April 2022 (Belgium Time) will operate under the name, Port of Antwerp-Bruges., The unified port will not only become the largest export port in Europe, but also the largest throughput port for vehicles, and the largest integrated chemical cluster.

According to the estimates of the Antwerp Port Authority, the unified port will provide approximately 74,000 direct and 90,000 indirect jobs, with an added value of nearly €21 billion or 4.5% of Belgian GDP. Port of Antwerp-Bruges will capitalize on the strengths of both ports, and aims to meet the need for recent developments in the international logistics chain, further to reinforce its position as one of the main gateways to Europe. 

In addition, Port of Antwerp-Bruges will also seek out a leading role as a green energy hub and contribute to the energy transition, with the continuation of CO2 capture, storage and reuse projects.

“I am convinced that this merger will lead to sustainable growth in economic activity and jobs in both sites, and boost Flanders’ international reputation around the world. Together, we are stronger”, said Dirk De fauw, Mayor of the City of Bruges and Vice-President of Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
